project 31 (—A Dialogue Between Two Dead Men)

A classic sight of two men participating in a duel.

Using biblical scale and scene, we see Goliath as a towering 9’-9” figure and David as a small statured underdog standing in a valley facing one another about to do battle.

The experience of David Irwin’s own life is contemplated as he arrived in Joshua Tree as a seeming outsider years prior. What unfolds are ensuing battles both internal and external.

It can be noted that the Goliath figure stands on the territory occupied by the main house on the property, a home David Irwin now owns and that the figure of the biblical David is entering from the periphery.

The use of common 2x building material acknowledges a current building-boom and the tension that this change has on the community.

A battle; frozen in time that offers an opportunity not to conquer nor resolve the natural forces of war.
